SCROOMS Beginner Guide: First Catch to First Upgrade

Last updated 2026-10-11Unofficial player article

Start with Leo’s Wooden Lute, land your first catch, sell to Julian, and equip the Tamer’s Guitar before heading to Halden.

SCROOMS starts with Leo's free Wooden Lute in Songkeeper’s Grove. Your first useful milestone is a caught Scroom, a completed turn-in, and an equipped Tamer’s Guitar; after that, follow Leo's direction to Halden.

Wooden Lute and first catches in SCROOMSEarly-access gameplay shows the tuning and creature-marker controls; follow the written launch tutorial for the purchase offer.

Give your first session a finish line

Treat the opening tutorial as one connected trip rather than three separate grinds. Leo supplies the tool, catching supplies something to sell, and Julian turns your catches into Chimes for an introductory upgrade. You can spend plenty of time exploring later; doing this short loop first gives you the menus and equipment needed to make that exploration productive.

Find Leo near spawn beneath the question-mark marker. The green arrow trail leads to him during the opening quest. Select Accept the gift when he offers the Wooden Lute, then equip the instrument from your hotbar. You do not need to buy a starter instrument before speaking to him.

Land a catch before worrying about rarity

Start playing with the lute equipped. Follow the timing display, then hold and drag the frequency slider until the waveform settles. When the catching stage appears, drag the creature so it stays inside the catch zone. The progress bar fills inside the zone and drains outside it; keep following the creature until the bar completes.

For this first objective, a successful catch matters more than chasing the rarest card. If you keep failing after tuning, focus on moving the mushroom marker instead of trying to move the catch zone. A slightly slower, controlled attempt is more useful than starting another attempt with the same misunderstanding.

Return to Leo after the catch. Getting Started! requires that conversation, so catching a creature alone does not finish the whole quest. Keep the Quest Log handy when a tutorial instruction seems to have stopped changing.

Julian stands at a wooden merchant stall in the Grove. Follow the selling instruction there, then look for the introductory Tamer’s Guitar offer. The launch tutorial shows 100 Chimes for this purchase. Use the price shown in your shop before confirming a purchase, since older footage can show a different offer.

Buying the guitar and using it are separate actions. Open the Equipment Bag, select the Instruments tab, select the guitar, equip it, and close the bag. The closing action is part of the tutorial sequence; leaving the bag open can make it look as though you are still on the same task.

Choose the next trip deliberately

Once the sale and guitar sequence is done, Leo directs you to Halden. Look for the campfire, log, and red tents in Songkeeper’s Grove. Halden's next task leads to the Ocarina, which plays utility songs rather than replacing your catching instrument.

If you would rather practice first, stay in the Grove and work on reliable catches. Open the Index to see which species are still missing, and read the instrument stats guide when a specific part of the minigame keeps giving you trouble. When you are ready for the next quest, use the five-statue locations to turn Halden's request into a concrete route.

Open the official SCROOMS experience to follow Leo’s opening task in your own session.
